2 Essential Apps for Improvisers

POSTED ON June 24, 2016   |   Post A Comment
I’d like to share a couple fantastic mobile apps. (These personal recommendations are not sponsored.)

Drumgenius is a game changer! This app is an encyclopedia of 400+ drum grooves to practice with–everything from Philly Joe Jones on “Bye, Bye Blackbird,” to a 15/8 Dave Holland groove plus dozens of Latin American rhythms. Each groove can be tempo and pitch shifted. Here’s a video demo. You can sample a few grooves for free and the full library is $8. Available for iOS and Android.

The ultimate drone app. “It uses stereo digital sound to simulate three different instruments in one app: two 4-string tanpuras as well as a 15-string Swar Mandal. It uses sounds sampled from real Hemraj tanpuras.” Video demo. Lite version is free, full version is $15. iOS only.

If you have been working through my book, The Living Jazz Tradition, I highly recommend practicing with these apps to work on material in chapters 2, 3, and 7.
